The Truck Driver Falls from the Bridge
The rain had been falling for hours when Marko, a veteran truck driver, began crossing the old iron bridge just outside the city. The river below was swollen and wild, crashing against the concrete pillars. He had driven this route hundreds of times, hauling goods from the port to small mountain towns, and he knew every turn by heart.
But that night felt different.
As Marko guided the heavy truck onto the bridge, a sudden gust of wind pushed against the trailer. The steering wheel trembled in his hands. He slowed down, focusing on the narrow lanes and the slick surface beneath the tires. Lightning flashed across the sky, briefly lighting up the dark river below.
Halfway across, he heard a loud crack.
One of the old guardrails snapped after being weakened by rust and years of neglect. The truck skidded on the wet surface. Marko tried to correct it, turning the wheel carefully, but the weight of the cargo shifted violently. In seconds that felt like minutes, the truck broke through the damaged railing.
For a moment, everything was silent.
Then the vehicle plunged downward.
Marko’s heart pounded as the truck hit the water with an explosive splash. Cold river water rushed into the cabin. Dazed but conscious, he unbuckled his seatbelt and forced the door open. Fighting the current, he swam upward, gasping for air as he finally reached the surface.
On the bridge above, a passing driver had witnessed the accident and called for help. Emergency lights soon painted the riverbanks in red and blue. Rescue teams pulled Marko from the freezing water, wrapping him in blankets as he struggled to catch his breath.
The truck was gone, swallowed by the dark river — but Marko was alive.
Later, as he sat in the back of an ambulance watching the storm slowly fade, he realized how quickly life can change. One second you’re driving toward your destination, thinking about tomorrow. The next, you’re fighting just to survive.
And from that night on, every bridge he crossed reminded him of the fragile line between routine and disaster.
