After recovery from chickenpox, the virus remains dormant in nerve tissue for years or decades, reactivating later in life to cause shingles. Reactivation often occurs when the immune system is weakened. Aging, chronic illness, stress, autoimmune disorders, or treatments like chemotherapy or long-term steroids can make individuals more susceptible.
