Jameka Mauldin’s weight climbed to 51 stone after years of desperately trying to stop her legs from growing. The 35-year-old single mum said she felt trapped in her own body, often needing help just to get out of bed. Doctors repeatedly told her to “eat less and move more,” but nothing worked. “It wasn’t just fat,” she said. “It was heavy, tight, painful. I knew something was wrong.”

In 2019, she finally received answers: lymphedema and lipedema — two progressive conditions that cause severe swelling and abnormal fat buildup, particularly in the legs. Both are chronic and cannot be reversed through diet and exercise alone. “Getting a diagnosis changed everything,” she said, describing the relief of finally being understood.

At her lowest point, she could barely walk and required assistance with daily tasks. After surgeries and serious infections, she even spent time in a care facility. But she refused to give up. Taking small steps each day, she committed to treatment, physical therapy, lifestyle changes, and targeted liposuction procedures

Today, Jameka has lost more than 25 stone and walks without assistance. She has returned to work as a Certified Nursing Assistant, calling it a full-circle moment. Her message is clear: this isn’t about willpower — it’s medical, and awareness matters.
